AutoIndex treats document representations as executable programs for optimization, diagnosing
retrieval failure patterns through agents and synthesizing candidate programs, iteratively improving index quality under a fixed BM25 retriever. On the CRUMB multitask benchmark, this method outperforms the static full-text BM25 baseline on all 8 tasks, with an average Recall@100 improvement of +8.4% and nDCG@10 improvement of +8.3%.
