TDK has launched the world's first direct retinal projection (DRP) smart glasses display using a
meta-optic mirror. This ultra-thin planar reflective element is 150 nanometers thick and has a visible light transmittance of 80%. This solution can avoid the common rainbow-like "eye glow" patterns of waveguide displays and reduce image leakage, and it can be manufactured using semiconductor wafer processes. The current system only supports monochrome images, but TDK is advancing demonstrations of full-color display and plans mass production in the coming years.
